Default Aftermarket Diff Covers, Needed Fluid Level?

OK guys I think I made a big dummy move.

So I got SOLID Diff covers for my D30/C8.25 and went to install them today, well instead of filling to the factory level of 1.5qt for the d30 and 2.5qt for the 8.25 I filled them till they started to come out of the fill hole.

Too much diff fluid a bad thing?

Do I need to empty some of the fluid out?

Im up to to 2.5qt in the D30 and 4.5qt in the 8.25.

Help me out here guys I was hoping to have this back on the road tonight.

Thanks

I would say you are fine. Do the covers look like they are larger capacity? Usually the filling to the fill hole is how you know they are full.

the hole is higher to compensate for different pinion angles. i always fill to whatever the stock capacities are. there is really no reason for that much fluid unless you tow huge loads or something.

The diff covers aren't listed as being higher capacity on the manufacturers website, even though they look like they are....I'm gonna say they aren't.

Yeah, I didn't realize that's why they were higher until after I filled them to the current level.

Do you guys think I'm at the level of blowing out axle seals?

I'll be honest I'm really just trying not to open the diff again... a lack of drain plug is killing me.

I have the Riddler ones and it took alot more then stock and it ended up dumping some of it out the overflow hose... I did not have any problems after that.

If you want to remove some fluid get a syringe and a flex hose and you can suck fluid out the fill hole.

Air breather hose**.. In any case, It has not blown anything in 150,000 miles... it just leeks out of that hose for a bit after I fill it lol

They do take more fluid than stock. The rear one if you fill all the way to the top, it will spit fluid out the breather tube, Not a big deal, just a waste of fluid.

Well I ended up getting a pump from autozone to pump some of the fluid out. I ended up with 2qts in the d30 and 3qts in the 8.25.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Mr. White, do you know how much fluid they're suppose to take or are you saying just fill them till they drip from the fill hole?

I fill mine over the stock level, about 0.5 qts or 1qt over IIRC. 4.5 qts in the rear will spit it out the breather. 3 or 3.5 will be fine. I haven't had any issues in the front putting 3 in there.

As mentioned previously, filling them until it starts to dribble back out is how you get the level right.

If the cover has extra capacity, that's not a bad thing - as long as the level is generally the same (the physical level, partial fill of the case. Extra oil just gives you longer additive life and greater thermal load capacity to keep the gears cool, just like installing an enlarged sump on your engine or transmission.)

to much oil can cause extra drag and foaming issue just as with any other fluid levels just saying the levels are there for a reason .

Fill to factory won't be enough.. My after market cover sticks out much much more than the stock. If I filled to factory and went up a hill, I would not have any fluid around the gears. (obviously an exaggeration but you get the point) Takes 2x as much fluid to fill to drain plug on the new one. Bigger cover= higher capacity. Unless it came with instructions on how much to fill it with, just fill to the drain plug and excess will come out.
