Default Aftermarket Coolant Temp Gauge

What are people using?

The factory gauge sucks and isn't reading true for me. Sensor replaced, all wiring checked (and is fine), connections at the back of the cluster refreshed, and still not reading what the IR temp gun is. Pointing at the thermostat housing and lower rad hose and reading in the 180s and the gauge is reading a tick over 210.

So I want to add an aftermarket one and stop chasing the problem with the factory gauge. Thinking with a T fitting in a hose somewhere.

What is your temp at the sensor in the back of the head? That is the one that your gauge reads off. Mine is the same way, cooler at the thermo housing than at the back of the head by at least 20*. Not too sure why.

Yeah I know that's the sensor. That's the one I replaced. I didnt point the IR temp gun at the head itself back there. Didnt think I'd get a good reading that way at all

THANX :-) I have the same problem, the gauge say 105-110 celsius, but the temperatur in front is ok. But if i use IR pointing at the sensor thats back on the head i dont get 105-110, so thats a litle confuising, but since you have the same "problem" it should be ok?
After i repalced my O2 sensor i had a drop from 110-115 down to 105 (still way to high, but i think its ok), my O2 sensor was bad. I think the problem is where the sensor are placed, it close to one of the exhaust ports and if the engine run a litle rich there is more unburnd gas that burns in the exhaust port and then the temperature is higher at that point..

I was thinking this:
http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/white...ure-gauge.aspx

And something like this:
http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/38-mm...ttachment.aspx

Just gotta decide/measure the diameter of which hose to use and get the proper sized attachment.

What do you all think?

I just installed an auto meter electric temp gauge. Works really well and very easy to setup.

I like the looks of that. Sounds easier and even says Jeep on it.

I'm assuming this is the one you got?

What else did you need to install it? A pod of some kind I assume?

These are the gauges that I have in my jeep. So far I have a volt and water temp. Next will be fuel level, tach, Speedo, trans temp and oil pressure. I was going to use some pre made pods but ran out of time to go buy one so I just drilled the holes into some spare sheet metal and mounted it up under my radio. For the water temp gauge, you just screw in new sending unit into back of head, run wire from sending unit to back of gauge, and tap into an existing power source or make new one off fuse panel, and splice into some of the kick panel or under dash lights to light the gauge up. Took me about 20 minutes to install 2 gauges.

I picked these ones up. They are closest to the stock gauges.

Autometer makes sever different lines of gauges depending on how you intend to use them. I have used them in all my race cars for the last 20+ years, the Pro Comp line. But any more all that is used are computers sensors for everything from burnout till you pull the shoot or shut off the engine. It's all logged and downloaded as soon as you get to the pits to make any changes needed.

I have been studying the dash in my XJ and have a template made for after market gauges for if one stops working I'll chance them all. Was looking around the shop and found all the Autometer gauges I would need except for the speedometer and fuel gauge all new in the box's. I found a small sheet of carbon fiber that will fit the template I made also. You can do a lot of cool things with these XJ's I can find something new all the time.

BTW you really should consider using the factory tap for your water temp gauge, it tells you the temp when it has passed over the pistons and valves and gives you an idea of how well your cooling system is working by water inlet temp into the block and heads.

I had a similar issue with inaccurate readings and went thru 3 aftermarket sending units before finally paying the higher price for the OEM sending unit. It works flawlessly. The borg units all read high.

I had a similar issue. Took out the factory water temp gauge and put black tape over the hole. I then bought this Stewart Warner gauge and mounted it on the driver side A Pillar. Im trying to replace all the gauges with Stewart Warner, but it will be a snow process.

This is the gauge I used, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-82307/overview/
