My advice is to take it to a shop that does this and have aftermarket A/C installed.
There's quite a bit of wiring involved in making factory A/C work. Your parts are likely to have been exposed to air inside for quite a while, which encourages corrosion and leaks, and you will also need to convert to R134a refrigerant for the project to be affordable at all. I *don't* think that even the pros can get R-12 any more.
That said, once an aftermarket unit is installed, it is easy to work on if needed, since they don't have to work with the PCM or have some of the switches that a factory system does.

Putting the factory air back into a non-air vehicle is doable, but you could not ask for a bigger PITA. I have got to agree going after market on this one.
