98 xj shakes violently on highway when hits a pothole
So latelly ive been driving long highways for aboit 80 miles one way to go to work. Everytime im going about 50 mph and over and hit a bump in the road or a little hole the truck shakes like crazy and dont stop till i slow it down to 40 mph and then its fine. It has 31 inch tires and a 4 inch lift.
Do i need front sway bars to stop this? Any recomendations would be great. Thanks in advance.

You'll want to search for "Death Wobble" as that seems to be what you have.
It could be a large number of things.
Alignment
track bar
tie rod ends
ball joints
control arm bushings
Look for anything that's loose or worn out on your front suspension.

Dont death wobble just happen on its own when hitting a certain speed? I can drive 90 on a highway with no bumps and its fine. Once i hit a bump in the road or a little pot hole no matter the speed it shakes and dont stop till 40 mphish

I had the EXACT same symptoms. That track bar will fix it. I had a Rusty's that was 2 years old and it was causing the vibrations. A local shop put on a JKS (2x as sturdy) and that took care of it.

This irritates the hell out of me...
Have you looked under your Jeep? There could be 30 different things wrong to cause your death wobble. It's most likely obvious as hell. The alignment may fix it and the track bar may fix it. Who knows. You may dump tons of money into it and not fix it. Use your eye ***** and LOOK.
You shouldn't be on 4"s of lift and the stock track bar anyway.

Yea go ahead and pick a fight with lowrange guys... lol
To the OP, had the exact same problem on my 91 (4" lift 31s, stock track bar) ended up being worn tie rod ends and the alignment. That's just me though.
I seen you mentioned getting the tires balanced if that's not done already start there.

I did look UNDER MY JEEP and everything looks as it should. As for the stock track bar the PO left it in and just relocated bolts. Not my doing at all. UNDER the jeep nothing is loose at all. Everything is tight as it should be. Tires are brand new. No wear on em. Tires and rims are on tight and torqued down from the tire shop.
Sorry for asking a normal question.
Sorry for asking a normal question.
There's no sense in spending a pocket full of money to fix the issue when you can search around for a few minutes and find simple ways to diagnose the actual problem and fix it the first time.
There's a pretty good chance that if you're rolling around with a stock track bar and 4" lift your alignment is way off anyway.
You say you looked under your Jeep. I suppose you saw stationary parts. How'd you check to see if they were worn?
...? I'm pretty sure that my first post was the most helpful post in this thread so far.
Yes, I've dealt with Death Wobble quite a few times and I know what I'm talking about.
