98 Cherokee Limited 4.0L, what other year engines fit?
I have a 1998 Cherokee Limited with a stock 4.0L that currently has what sounds like no compression on at least one or two cylinders. Haven't had much chance to pull the plugs and see which are soaked yet, going to do that today. Water is coming out of the exhaust and it sounds like an itty bitty diesel the way it runs. There's no water in the oil aside from what appears to be simple condensation from sitting in the driveway.
My question is, what year(s) of engines will fit in my Jeep? I do plan to tear the motor I have apart enough to see if it's actually a cracked block like what the POs said, or if it's just a blown head gasket (which is what I suspect), but I'm also looking around for complete engines for cheap, in case I can find one that's already good to go and I can just drop it in.
I've read that 99+ Cherokees were distributorless also; was it all of 99 from start to finish, or was it mid-year, or what...? I'm still learning the Jeep stuff, I've mainly worked on older gas trucks.

Anything older should fit. 91+
There just small differences like the 02 sensor placement and all that.
Your best bet is to find a motor from the exact same year or simply have that one replaced.
