I've searched and searched but there's still a bit I'm unclear on. Can i use any aw4 in my jeep or will I have a problem. People say that sensors and computers are different.

Please let me know.

What exactly are you planning on doing? Im unclear what you are trying to accomplish. If its a 2wd to 4wd conversion then you need a diff trans just because of the tailshaft.

I understand what I need. I'm asking about the trans itself. What year ch can i get the trans from. Some people say I can only use a 97 plus trans. Others say i can use any aw4

you can use any aw4 from 91-01. i have a working example in my jeep. i have a 91 xj that has 2000 engine, interior, rear end and so on. However i am still using the 91 aw4. you will have to tap into the ground wire in the tranny harness and ground it as the 97+ grounds through the harness and the 96- grounds through the sensors. Mine is a Daily driver with nothing wrong. shifts perfectly. and no check engine lights! THE major thing you have to watch out for is the spline count on the tail shaft. I think the 96- aw4 were a 21 spline and the 97+ were 23 spline.

So if i get a say 91 ch and i use the trans and tcase do i have to worry about the spline count? And what do you mean by ground the harness? Do I have to swap the NASA and speed sensor as well?

I have never done it but i would just find a jeep about same year as yours with a blown engine for 500 bucks.Take all the parts you need for the swap and maybe other things you need then scrap the rest and get your money back.

Ya i may have to do that. But i was hoping I could already just find the parts and put them in instead of removing things twice
