I have a '97 4.0L XJ with a bad 2wd AW4. Since I am replacing the transmission I decided to go for the 4WD conversion. I wasn't going to throw down the cash for a new transmission and couldn't wait around for a '97 to show up, so I picked up a '94 4WD AW4. The difference in the '97 4WD from previous years is electrical from reading:

"If you have a 1997 XJ:
1990.5-1996 AW4s are bolt-in, except you have to cut and splice the wiring harness connector. Again, 5 butt-splice crimp terminals and a few minutes and this is done. You will have an EXTRA connector for the transfer case indicator lamp wiring (possibly depending on which transfer case you have) - plug the transfer case switch into the one it was previously plugged into, NOT the one built into the harness on the new AW4! You might want to cut the extra one off or tape it up to avoid confusion."

But I am complicating matters further by also going from 2wd to 4WD. I appreciate a little help on this swap. Do I just swap the plug and splice matching wires? And ignore the two left over?
