Default 92 XJ to 2001 swap

Hey everyone I very rarely post because usually I can find all the answers and questions already covered. But I have a pretty big project will be starting next spring. Just bought a 2wd 4.0 auto 1992 Jeep XJ thats from cali and has zero rust and plan to trasplant everything from 2001 XJ into it. Planning on selling everything from the 92 and just using it as a shell. Right now im just trying to get my master plan together.

My first question is about the 97-01 wiring harness. I would like the use the 97-01 system that has the Single piece manifold and only two o2 sensors over the setup in my 01Xj witch has the two piece manifold with four sensors and precats. Would the wiring harness and pcm with the two o2 sensors and cap and rotor ignition work with the rest of the Wiring on my 01 Xj (lights, blinkers, and interior) I am aware I would have to change the entire exhaust system but I’m planning on doing that anyways. Thanks alot!

Sounds like a real big project, but nice find on the rust free XJ.

Question- are you dead set on using the running gear from the 2001? It may be easier to sell the 2001 as a whole and try to find a donor first gen xj. Is the motor in the 92 good? Because then all you would need from a donor is the transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, and front axle, to convert to 4WD. I've been considering doing the same to my 92XJ.

Or are you looking to use the dash and everything from the 2001 into the 92? Then you will be entering the twilight zone as far as electronics.

Basically I’m going to strip the 92 and transplant everything into it from my 01 interior, drivetrain, axles, wiring and electronics. The current interior that’s in the 92 is basically destroyed. And I really like the interior in my 01 it’s a limited with all leather and I’m pretty comfortable with OBD 2. I would just like to get rid of the two extra O2 sensors and two extra cats If the 97-99 ignition/ emission system will work with the rest of the wiring from my 01.

It sounds like your 01 had the California emissions system. I do not know how it would work without readings for those sensors. You may be better to use the wiring and pcm from a truck that does not have the dual cats, etc.

If you are not opposed to it, see if you can get a parts truck for those parts, and kinda frankenstein the interior, etc from the 01, the pcm, emissions, etc. from an earlier model, or junkyard even.

You could probably use the harness and pcm from a 2000 XJ with the federal emission system, and just use the federal cat setup from that engine, bolted to your 01 engine, assuming you know the history of your 2001 engine to be good.

What you want to do is possible, just complicated. TAKE YOUR TIME, planning and gathering parts will allow you to be able to complete the swap easier.
