Default 8.25 for $20

So I just picked up a 27 spline 8.25 for $20. I am pretty sure its blown up but I have not cracked it open yet, I figured $20 I cant go wrong. My question is if the carrier is scrap should I clean it up, sell it, and get a 29 spline, or swap the carrier and axle shafts for 29 spline? Ether way I will be putting in 4.88 gears with 33s.

Just as a note my heep is street legal but trail only. Not interested in 8.8 option right now.

Thanks for the help.

Eh, its really what you want to do with it.

With 33's and 4.88 29 spline would be better but I doubt you'd break the 27 spline unless you have no idea how to use the skinny pedal other than to mash it.

If it was my money being spent I'd just get a 29 spline axle that's intact and be done with it.

Sell the 27 spline for more than you paid and it's a win win.

sounds like a lot of work for a boat anchor. I'd just try to find a 29 spline 8.25 personally. might as well make it 29 spline with whatever route you choose

Keep it.

1. Full case locker & gears.
2. Aftermarket 29 spline axles.
3. Forget about using the skinny pedal properly.

I like this idea but I was going to weld it. I dont want to pay $400+ on a locker.

Ah you're going to build it like that. Then just go with whatever route is cheaper for junk yard 29 spline. A complete axle or a pair of shafts + carrier. At pick-n-pull the complete axle is $150 and 1 shaft is $35. I'd just get a complete axle if the cost is close so you don't have to screw with it.
