Default 4WD Shifter Removal for Linkage Swap

We got the Boostwerks linkage + extension for a lifted 91 XJ. Instructions say to remove the 4WD shifter assembly so that we can drill a hole on the tab.

Is there ANY way to do this without removing the carpet?

Hahaha No it didn't. I have a dangerous combo of impatience and a dull knife, so I just cut the carpet & pad down to the edge of the impressions that were left by the console. Didn't want to cut any farther, to avoid leaving visible cuts. I did cut one spot beyond the edge of the console, but it's under the front corner of the driver's seat, so nobody's every gonna see it.

Anyway, I just rednecked it until I could get at the screws holding it down, and it worked - as most redneck fixes do.

NEW QUESTION: How on earth do we get the tab off of the TC so that we can put on the new Boostwerks tab? I grabbed it with a wrench, but instead of turning the bolt (it is a bolt, isn't it?), it just shifted the TC.

My son and I are complete newbies, using this rig for both of us to learn how to start fixing our own cars. So there you have it: newbies, rednecks, and dull knives! lol

I just installed the boostwerks kit the other day. You just loosen the bolt on the shifter tab (it will shift all the way forward) but if you give it a little extra oomf then nut will start to turn. Same thing when tightening but it shifts the other way.

Excellent! That's what I suspected, but my level of ignorance tells me that I could be unwittingly dangerous, so figured I'd better check!
