Hello guys and gals. I'm posting on behalf of my father who owns the cherokee. It's a 1997 XJ.

He has only recently bought it and yesterday decided to try and put it into part time 4WD. The car has been working well in 2WD up to this point.

He tells me he stopped the car, put it into PT 4WD and upon starting it again the car felt as if it had it's brakes on. Simply would not pull forward.

He turned it off again and put it into 2WD and found the same problem and wasn't able to move forward in 2WD until he 'messed around' with putting it into gear.

It's an automatic i should probably mention and has been used for city driving for most of it's life.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated as my friend believes it to be a costly transfer case fix.
