Default 4BT swap questions..

Hey guys I've been on the 4bt forums, cherokee forums and all.. did my research but I am still left looking for some answers. I'm looking for general info.. such as noise factor in my jeep, fumes, drivability, and other things.. My DD is a powerstroke do I'm used to the clanking noise that comes with diesels but I am not sure what a Cummins will sound like IN the cab of a cherokee.. I've watched the videos but I'm skeptical since the mic could be making it a little bit worse than it really is. I also read the fumes factor is bad in a TJ.. but of course that's a TJ. I'm looking for some wisdom on general drivability. Thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong but... wouldn't the fume thing be easily corrected by a properly setup/routed exhaust? (dunno anything about diesels) Also you could consider laying down some sound deadening material in the XJ. Good question, though.

Yeah that is what I wanted to know, I mean a little fumes is okay.. Its not gonna be a 6.7 with all the technology involved but i'm worried about too much interior fumes coming from the bay. Do sound damper sheets actually work?

4bt is not a good choice for an xj the unibody flexes with offroading imagine with a heavy pig of a diesel tucked in there...i met a guy who put one in a yj (i know not super similar but he regretted it their not the best choice) now a vw tdi on the other hand would be awesome i met a guy who swapped one in an xj and loves it better mpg than the 4.0 cherokee and more power (he is running bigger turbo and such)...

and simply put if you have this many uncertainties and questions it will not be easy for you

I do a lot of traveling so I like the idea of 24mpg man.. and also it won't be offroad much if any.. I have a TJ to keep my offroad habits and plan on later building another XJ for flexing and fun. This will be more of a DD with the capibility of offroad for rescue squad stuff if needed. My questions are more nitpicking. I'm not set on the 4BT however I had not looked into the VW. I do have questions but regardless of the answers it is doable for me. I just don't know anyone with done nor have I seen it in person, I just want to know what to expect. Between what I know and what CF and 4BTforums has I think it will be fine for what I ask of it. I will however look into the VW TDI! Thanks for filling me in on that.

I've also seen Mercedes diesel swaps. As far as practicality for a dd, i don't think a 4bt is your best bet

Mercedes OM617 all the way!! great motor good power and about the same weight as a 4.0 as Ive been told. It would be my go to swap for MPG and good drivability and low noise and vibration. There are some guys that have done it on 3'' of lift that say they are getting 25mpg. I had a Mercedes diesel for a DD it had 350k miles and was still going strong.

VW swap.. You have me curious now! As to the OM swap I read into that but people werr saying the 4BT was a better swap! I'm hearing a lot on here that the OM and VW TDI are better.. just curious from the mod standpoint are there aftermarket bolt ons like the 4BT? I hadn't really planned on doing it but it is still on my mind lol.

I read somewhere that the big problem with the 4BT was the overall height of the engine. The ones I did see video of seemed to hang out of the bottom of the XJ quite a bit, otherwise I think you have to cut a hole in the hood.

I was researching them quite a bit looking to put one in my F150, which I think would be a good fit, but they do look much taller than the 2.5L that is in my XJ.

TDI VW have a big following as far as mods . Its a diesel more fuel ( read tuned right ) Means more power. there are upgrade turbos and pump mods as well as injector/nozzle mods out the butt.
Ive got a bud with one that has 450k on his TDI jetta and all he has is a chip. its mileage is still high 30 -40s . If I was looking for a diesel car i would be getting a tdi jetta manual trans. the auto is weird.
