4 banger axles

So i found a 4 cylinder 5 speed xj in the jy hp30 c8.25 27 spline. My questin is how well will the 27 spline 8.25 hold up with 31x10.50 tires and a locker. Would chromo shafts be a good idea. Want to run these for cheap 4.10 gears.

cdawall 01-19-2012 06:19 PM

It would be just fine on stock shafts.

freegdr 01-19-2012 06:21 PM

just as strong as the 35 your running now

Its got a 27 spline 8.25 now just want to swap for the better gearing from the 4 banger axles.

Geared mine to 4.10 and installed a lock rite, been holding my 35x15.5 swampers just fine. Gets some good abuse on the weekend!

Thanks for all the info. Im picking up an xj d44 but dont have money to regear and lock it right away. So figured id throw in the 4 banger axles untill i can get 410s and a locker for the 44 and when its done ill already have the hp30 with 410s up front saves me time and money in the long run. Was just a little worried about the 27 spline holding up but sounds like it should be fine.

My friend runs 31s on a welded 27 8.25, its a trail only truck and he has a heavy foot and has never broke a shaft.

I've seen a Cherokee run all the toughest trails in Moab on a C/8.25 with 27 spline shafts running 32s the C/8.25 has a stronger housing and stronger tubes than the D/35 so the differential doesn't flex which is what causes the D/35 to bust shafts so often.
The 27 spline 8.25 can be upgraded to 29 spline alloy shafts easily and cheaply and then your 8.25 would be strong enough to run 35s.

Dont you have to go full case locker to swap to 29 spline shafts?

xj_maniac_newb 01-20-2012 04:09 PM

Wont work, you should sell them to me. I'll give you $350 shipped.

To swap from 27 to 29 spline a 29 spline carrier would be in order, a locker or limited slip with a 29 spline carrier or even a stock 29 spline carrier should work.

No. You would have to pick up a carrier for the 29 spline shafts or a full case locker, but you don't have to go to a full case locker, but of course the full case locker will make the differential just that much stronger.

red xj 01-21-2012 04:26 PM

Agree with you Rock Toy if i go to 29 spline it will get a detroit locker if i have to swap carriers might as well go with something thats damn near bombproof. And i cant afford the whole setup to run an ARB lol.

Rock Toy 01-21-2012 06:36 PM

Yeah, if you read my sig you'll see that is the way I went, 27 spline to alloy 29 spline shafts, Detroit locker, and 4.88 gears with a master overhaul kit and Riddler covers to protect it all.
Works great.
