Default 4:10 or 4:56 Gears?

I have a 98 XJ with a 5 speed tranny, after doing some research on here I've heard people say they prefer 410s rather than 456 gears for 33s and some say the opposite. I'm planning on about 5" lift and 33 swampers. I figure 33s with stock 307 gears is gonna be terrible but I can't decide which gears to go for. Any opinions? I know for an auto 456s are recommended with 33s, is it the same for a 5 speed?

4.10:1 with an AX-15 and 33" tires will be closer to stock gearing than 4.56:1.

Check this tool out:http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html Set up the stock vehicle on the left and try various combos on the right. Crawl speeds and highway RPM are displayed at the bottom

Go deeper for sure. I have a buddy running 4.88 and 33's 5 speed he loves it on the freeway and city. The difference between 4.10 and 4.56 at 65mph is about 200 RPM higher. Go deeper

Big part depends on how you plan to use your Jeep.

I had a 2000 Wrangler with NV3500 5spd and 35" MTR Tires.... I had 4.56 and loved them.... could cruise 80mph down the highway and had good torque offroad. If I was going to do it again I would probably try 4.88's but I am more for the off road than highway with my Jeep.

I say 4.56 unless you plan on a lot of 70+ highway driving

Its not going to be my daily driver but I want it to have good power in low gears off road but also be able to cruise down the highway since I will be driving a few hours to the mountains every so many weeks

4.56 imo. I have 4.10's with skinny light 33's, and wish I had lower for wheeling. Crawl ratio isnt as low as I'd like. On road it isnt too bad, but I'm personally going with 4.88's.

Is your sig correct? That's the stock setup with the 2.5L engine (28" tires)

Yeah, I know mine is stock. And its not low enough offroad, in 4-low, and first gear. Still does better crawling than my buddys 4.0 AW4 XJ on 29" tires though.

Well of course not lol. "My stock gears suck" is the entire point of this thread. 4.0 5-speed comes with 3.07:1 from the factory, 4.10:1 is a huge change.

4.10s are close to the stock ratio on 33s with a 5 speed so they'd be your right in the middle.

4.56s will be best on the trail and the city but you mpgs will suffer

Ill be going 4.56 when i go 33s but I've got an auto so it'll be close to stock. That's what I'm looking for cause I do a lot of highway commuting

gas is controlled by the throttle. deeper gears will mean you are using less throttle in order to accelerate because your RPM's are higher. you're taking less of the load off the engine and putting the axles to work.

where does that equate to worse gas mileage? sure if you're using 5.13's with 33's I see it being effected. but 1 ratio deeper?? someone correct me here

Not true..... as the transmission shifting will take effect to match speed.

Deeper gears will help with getting the jeep moving using less gas because you have more torque, therefor Deeper gears will help around town with a lot of stop and go.

Think of a bicycle and the energy to start riding with a smaller gear for torque vs. a taller gear for speed, which one takes more energy to get moving?
