4.0 Upgrade

So i will probably be resurrecting my '89 XJ w/4.0 some time soon with a complete overhaul and i had a few questions.

I have been contemplating upgrading the motor to a newer year like a '96 or so w/OBDII for better tunability and reliability.

Has anybody done this? Is it worth the trouble? Are there any Write ups available?

Thnx for your time.

sure ther are write ups somewhere. you will need complete wiring harness from the obd2 motor a new ecu and bunch of diffrent sensors the accual obd2 connector. its a pita for most but i can be done. just out of curiosity why do you want to convert to obd2?

Because the renix system sucks. If you can find a motor (really just need the head and accessories) with a complete wiring harness for a good price then it would be worth it. I scrapped my 88 cause i hated dealing with renix

Edit: stick with OBD1, easier to trick and probably easier to find in a junkyard

Thnx guys. Should be too much of a problem to find a block and such, I was thinking OBDII because of the tunability on it. In my opinion u cant beat the programming on OBDII comps.
Thnx for the input

i beg to differ. renix jeeps were ahead of thier time. i don't know how much you know about jeeps nor is it any of my buisness. but theyre are jeep clubs based soley on renix jeep because of it. maby you should do a little more reserch.

There's clubs for only renix jeeps because thats how many people it takes to fix them. 80's efi always sucked, no matter how made it.

I love my Renix when it's running right. As for the OBD2, you might be better off to buy a ready to run 97-01. I just rewired a 98 that someone put a Renix in and messed up the wiring royally. It's a real pita. Runs great now that everything's been changed including the head.
