4.0 with carb questions
I'll make this short as Possible. I have a 85*jeep Cherokee*with a 4.0 swapped. The*wiring harness*inside has a short some where in it. I have everything to swap over to a carb from previous owner. My only question is, how do I get the ignition to work? Do I need to get a new distributor with a vacuum advance? Anything will help, this Is going to just be my winter car that's it. No crawling what soever that's what my yota is for.

My 89 XJ 4.0 is running a distributor (old style) with nothing more than 12V from the ignition switch, I'm using this one :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/200804032196?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITit will be similar to my setup, I'm running LPG in my vehicle, no ECU no fuel injectors, just LPG being sucked by vacuum force (similar to a carburator principle)
The OEM distributor and coil if I'm correct, will need the signal from the computer to send the spark, therefore you cannot run those by themself

so you would rather downgrade and do carb than do it right and keep it efi? that sure is smart.
keep the efi, its gonna get better mileage and performance.

That's how I bought it from the previous owner. Electrical fire on the inside harness and no engine harness. The previous owner bought everything for a carb expect distributor. I don't care about power or fuel economy. I have a nice car and crawler just need this jeep for snowy days.

It wouldn't cost that much to buy all you need from a JY XJ to make yours an EFI setup and run so much better than a carb ever will and with fewer problems.

Switching to a carb isn't hard at all. You can buy a D.U.I. distributer for a 258 that will drop in for spark n delivery, and Clifford Performance makes an Intake manifold to carb a 4.0L head.
