31s and no trimming on a 3 inch lift?
Hello before I lift my 98 XJ limited I have people saying two different things. Can I fit 31 inch tires on a zone 3 inch lift WITHOUT trimming my fenders? I like the look of them and I'd rather not mess with them. Or should I just go 30s if I don't want to trim? Please help.

Yes you can.. like ktm said, either stay with stock rims or get some with 4 or 3.75.. I have a 98 also, if i were you id trim the lower part of the fender and where it wraps under the front bumper...looks much better!

I have a 1998 with a 3" Pro Comp lift and BFG 31" A/Ts and it clears fine. At full turn it hit the front corners of the light plastic inner fender or splash guard (whatever that thing is) so I trimmed off the corners and solved the problem.

All jeeps are different when put a lift on. I have a 2 in and 31s with no rubbing, however my bro has 3 in and 31s and has rubbing.

I've got a '91 with a 3" RC lift (on the XJ when I bought it) and 31's. Only rubbing I have is with my stock wheels at full lock on the LCA's (just a little bit). The PO did take out the inner fenders though.

Your tires will rub with stock rims... on any year model... hits the LCA's most of the time... Im running 3 inch lift on 30's no prob with 3.75" backspacing... could fit 31's fine... would rub when i flex though... esp in the rear... just do it lol

I run 32's with 2.5" lift. Stock flares.
Don't go over 10.5" wide. 4-4.5" backspacing.
Adjust steering stops so the tires don't rub the lca's.
If you get rubbing on the fender Wells(which will only happen with swaybars removed) just extend bump stops until there is no rubbing.
Shoot you only have to go 2" of lift if you want.
Very simple problem to deal with.

I ran 32x11.50s back in the day with stock flares. Just some key trimming and they worked fine. Could barely tell it was trimmed in fact i didnt even touch the back.
All these people with 3" and 31s saying it will rub are crazy. OH MAH LAWD IT HITS DA CONTROL ARMS AT FULL LOCK!!! Just turn the steering stops out a turn or 2, big whoop.

old pics... 3" rustys with RE SF arms, 31" BFG ATs, no trimming, no rubbing.
the whole "every jeep is different" argument is BS. only 84-96 and 97-01 jeeps are different. wheels BS makes or breaks whether you trim or not, and how much.

More than anything it depends on the wheel. I have 31x10.5 on 15x10 wheels (I know, I know). Before trimming my tires rubbed the plastic bumper cover down on the corners. With the bumper corners off, I could DD it fine without rubbing. Out on the trail, my stock flare popped off after about 30 seconds.
You don't NEED to trim, but IMO you should at least ditch the stock flares.
