Default 3000 rpm idle

My 1990 Cherokee idles at 3000 rpm. When I start it it is at 1100 and slowly works it's way up. I've slapped the gas and that did not help. What is causing this problem? Thanks.

Sounds like a sensor issue. Possibly, of ya got one, the TPS or IAC valve. If your '90's got one or both, change em. Other than that, if there's a kick-down cable adjustment for yours, that could help...

Most likely your throttle position sensor. Try adjusting it cruiser54 has detailed instructions. Pm him and I'm sure he will gladly send them to you

I'm having the same issue and I'm thinking it's the TPS for me.

I just got done putting on a new throttle position sensor. That didn't do it. When it's in drive or reverse it idles at 1100 but in neutral or park it kicks up.

I had the same issue when I cleaned mine. Turns out I put it in the wrong way! I did not even know that was possible but when I flipped it over and plugged it back up... 750 rpm idle.

And you adjusted it to 83% of the input voltage on the trans side?
