If you keep the 242 you are pretty much limited to a hack-n-tap. There are lots of threads out there about them. Once you go to a 231 your options open up.

Tom Woods does have a SYE kit for the 242 cases. Basically, he takes a stock shaft and shortens it and resplines it, gives you a new tail stock housing and either flange or yoke output. I and running one on my 242 with great results.

NP242 FTW!
Unless of course you're a hard core rock crawling guy then keep an eye out for good deals on 231s. My XJ has the 242 and my dad's the 231. We both like the 242 better but we live in MN and there are icy patches and dry patches that will damage the part-time of the 231. Either way is a win

You know something I never understood about New Process when it can to the 242 and 231j cases is the difference in front output diameters and splines. The 231, while can be made to have a 32 spline rear output comes stock with a 27 spline front output. While the 242 comes with, yes a 27 rear output, it has 32 spline (HD) front output. Unless you find a liberty or V8 GC 242, which has larger outputs front and rear.
If you can find a H1 242, which has 32 splines outputs front and rear, wider chain, etc. you can swap everything on to the 242J front housing and still keep 2wd which the H1 242 doesn't have.
