Well up here where I live the cheap lube would be probably around the $10-12 but you get into the Lucas/Royal Purple etc and it'll jump to like $20 instead. Still a far cry from $109 .. but still.

$120 RE H&T Kit for a 242
$350 Custom Drive Shaft
No Seals or Lube required as the case never gets opened.
Labor $90 / Hr - 3 Hrs tops if I stop halfway through for lunch and drink a few beers...
Mark up for the parts 25%...
Your total is $857.50 plus tax...
My Hack and Tap cost me less than $200 for the kit, a J/Y Drive Shaft, and the labor to have the length custom...
Obviously the shop kept all the labor rates, materials plus the cost of a 231 SYE and billed it to you although it is not what you received.
I'd tell them they need to correct the situation as they made plenty of money on the deals as it is or you'll contact the BBB.

Yeah, they need to refund that gasket cost, and the fluid cost. That is absolutely ludicrous, there is ZERO justification for either of those two.
The SYE Kit, Driveshaft, and Labor are all subjective based on their supplier and their overhead (they DO need to make money on the parts too, otherwise they have no reason to be in business).
That said, in my opinion they have added an inappropriate amount of overhead to those costs and does not indicate an honest shop.

So I have had a couple discussions with the shop manager. He has given me the choice of a $300 refund (seal kit and oil) or he will put the advanced adapters 242 sye kit in for no charge. So I would at least be getting what I had originally thought I was getting, even if it is a bit more than you all think I should have paid. Money back is tempting tho...
What do you guys think?

I'd make him put the one that should have been in first for that kind of money.
Mainly since it looses him labor, oil, seal, etc. cost.
Though, at that price you could have had a Rubicon T-Case...

If you are happy with the current install, I say leave it. Take the money and tell them that they better at least stand by the work that they did perform.
Find out if they actually changed the fluid, and if not change it yourself (or maybe pull the fill plug and check yourself).

its a tough decision, although the true sye is a better option then the hack & tap , i dont think i would trust them doing anymore work on the jeep. since they tried to take advantage of you to begin with, it looks like the work done was done correctly & if it drives vibe free. i think i would take the money & say lesson learned, get away from them & warn your friends about how they operate.

I understand the responses about steering clear of this shop. However, this is one of the most respectable 4x4 shops in the Denver Metro area. I have decided I want what I originally paid for. They will be redoing the work to install the advance adapters sye kit at no charge. I will post photos after the work gets done next week.
I appreciate all the suggestions.

I had a H&T put on my 231 2 or 3 years ago. I am not at all easy on it. AT ALL!!
They are perfectly fine to run. But I understand you wanting to get what you paid for.

Agreed. Hack n' craps are okay to run if you're broke, but they're garbage to install. I won't do them because I'd rather just swap the mainshaft than screw around trying to drill it.
