242 to 231 w teraflex short shaft sye. speedo help
i was about to buy a 231 with a teraflex short shaft sye off craigs list but i ran into some problems. im hoping you guys can help me out.
because of the teraflex short shaft the 231 has a tonal ring speedo.
my 242 has a speedo gear
the tonal ring speedo has a 3 wire plug.
my 92 cherokee 242 has a 2 wire plug. if you follow the wires to the engine bay they go into a 4 wire conector harnes.
ive been searching but havent found anything helpful yet
i called teraflex and they said they would have to call me back
i thought that maybe if i knew what the 4 wires are i could hook it up
any advise?

I'm pretty sure the extra short sye kits use a hall sensor and send a "digital" speedo signal just like the 96? And newer xjs. (frequency) The standard kits and earlier jeeps use an "analog" type of signal. (0-12 amps or something similar)
The ECU converts these signals to an output that controls the MPH gauge. The signals are not directly interchangeable. They do make converters you can buy. But I honestly don't know the source off the top of my head.

signal and ground. The three wire style is 5v power, signal, and ground.

Well being stubborn as I am and not finding any solutions on the internet. I said **** it and just started experimenting.
took a trip to the junk yard and looked at the wires. the only thing missing was the third wire (power)
I took a 3 wire speedo gear I had lying around and connected the ground and signal to my 2 wire harness on the engine side.
then I took the third wire and hook it up to the battery 12v
(should prob be 5v to do it right this was just a test)
Started up the jeep and spun the speedo gear. And guess what?
BOOM!! my jeep blew up!!!!!
....just kidding it worked !!!!!! as i spun the gear the speedo went up retrospectively
I will plug the 3 wire speedo into my transfer case once I get some better wiring just to be sure that it will be accurate
But based off this im thinking that the short shaft sye 231 should work with older jeeps like mine

Which wire did what? I have a similar issue with mine. Here's a pic of the sender and I have no idea which one goes to what. I have no connector under the Jeep so I will have to make my own.
