Longer shocks will be needed cause over extending them will cause them to wear out faster. If your looking for something affordable try the pro comps. I only paid 35 apiece for mine from four wheel parts.

I ran stock shocks until I added some leafs. A BB adds 2", It has sagged 1"-2" from stock, so you about back to stock or an inch higher, stock shocks will be fine.

I put 2" spacers up front and 2" shackles in the back.
but I also did new shocks as mine were shot.

i got shocks meant for a longer lift and when i compared them to the ones that were already on, i could see a couple of inches in difference of length when fully extended.

now when i flex i have more to move and wont "bottom out" on the shocks before my flex maxes out and of course they are new and nitro filled and the ride is soooo much smoother.

i paid 200 for the coil spacers, shackles and 4 rc8000 shocks
well worth the money

You should be fine with the stock shocks.

if they sag now, then its time.
adding shackles wont make em sag immediately

depending on the year of your xj, you might not need em for a while.
but if you can afford em, no reason not to go ahead and change em out if its old enough.
since your already going to be under there, might as well change em out. but if you dont, its not that much more work to go back later either.
