Default 1976 Cherokee Chief Swappable Parts

So I just obtained a 1976 Cherokee Chief. It has Dana 44s in the front and back. I'm wondering if all of the Dana 44s from then until now are interchangeable in parts? Carriers, pinions, axle rods, brakes, rebuild kits, etc.

I see Dana 44 parts out there on 4wheelparts and such that say they fit a Dana 44 but only on the JK so that's where I'm a little unsure.

Axle shafts, lug patterns, brakes.....etc........will all be different.

Search for your year.....parts are out there.

The JK Dana 44 should not have been called a Dana 44 it is a completely different axle.

What I'm wondering is if I wanted to get lockers for it, would any Dana 44 locker work? As long as the spline count and gear ratio is right?

Short answer any 44 locker might not work,Because some like the jk and 44hd use a bigger diff then a normal 44 would so it won't fit the housing.Search by the year and what jeep you have or go look on bjs off road they have lockers for the fsj.

Yeah I realize the JK 44s wouldn't work. I was mostly wondering if any other Dana 44 parts would fit. I've been looking through bjs off road and I definitely like the selection and the fact that it lists what works and what doesn't. I was trying to use 4 wheel parts to narrow down the list of compatible parts but it still tosses in stuff that I know wouldn't work.

I guess here's an example to clarify.

I found this. Is a Ford Dana 44 in those years the same as the D44 in the Jeep?

Do you understand that axles are different widths right?Like i have told you look for stuff made for your jeep or its probably not gonna work.If bjs off road has it it will work.

Yeah I understand. Im just looking to find what is swappable between different vehicles and what not. I know axle shafts are axle width dependent. I'm not one to stick to just one website and some simply say "For Dana 44". Such as rebuild kits.

the pumpkin on pre 1979 jeeps are on the passenger side. Ford have the pumpkin on the drivers side.

Still learning about this thing. How come they won't? If the lengths are right that is.

Not like Ford or Jeep make the Dana axles.

The spline count is probably wrong the axles are different widths the early bronco is shorter and the diff is on the wrong side. Its like you wear a size 12 shoe and try to put on a size 8 its not gonna fit.Like i have said over and over bjs off road has everything you could want on one site and it will fit.
