can i run 16 wheels and tires on xj?

Yes, 16x7 were an option on later moderl XJ limited.

I would think you'd gain some ground clearance since the wheel is an inch larger. Factory tire size was 225/70/16. Depending on what kind of lift you have or want, you'll be able to go larger.

No, it won't give you more ground clearance unless you go to a larger diameter tire.

currently running stock as above. want more ground cleqraqnce without lift hassles. can i run bigger wheels and tires to get it?

I could be wrong, but I think factory tire size was 215 75 15

-actually 225-75-15

According to tirerack.com
Cherokee SE 215/75/15
Cherokee Classic and Sport 225/75/15

At this point, I dont know that the exact difference between those and the 16's.

To the OP though, why do you want to run 16s, for ground clearance? I would just go up in tire size on 15's.

Nope...rims size is an inch bigger, not tire diameter, if you put a bigger diameter tire on will it give you more clearance.
