150 carb
Hey guys,
I just completed my XJ project ('85, 2.5 AMC (150 engine), auto) and when trying to break in the cam, I came across a huge problem... I put a 1bbl Rochester carb from the mid 50's on the 1bbl manifold and it ran so rich, it fouled out the plugs within 30 seconds... I had already rebuilt the carb, so I took it apart again and couldn't find anything wrong. I think maybe the carb's CFM rating is too high for the engine. I put the stock carb back on and broke the cam in with no problems. It's a 280 regrind cam, .040 over bore, ported and polished, balanced, reworked bowl, gasket matched and ported manifold, 5 angle valve grind, mirror polished valves, etc... The stock carb has electrical nannies all over it and isn't going to work for my build. It's a completely stripped XJ, 33" BFG A/T's with a custom dash and wiring harness I hand made, fuel cell, relocated battery in the back, etc. Think Jeep speed on a budget. Does anyone know what the stock carb's CFM rating is, so I can find a carb that will work, or maybe where I can score a Weber carb and 1bbl adapter for UNDER $300?

195cfm on the Carter. Not sure about the Rochester but probably around 250cfm.
I have a Carter 1bbl carb from a '73 258 if your interested. Don't remember it having any electrics but I could check.

250 CFM should be ok for my engine. I took the idle screw out of the carb at work and it was covered in crap! I guess I forgot to clean it... *******... Ill clean the **** out of it and try it again tomorrow. If it still doesn't work, it could make a good 900 yard target for my .308
