102 inch cb antenna?
i want to set up a cb on my jeep and im thinking of getting a 102 inch steel antenna because those seem to get the best signal. my plan is to mount it to the hood and bend in back and attach it to my roof rack to secure it down. would this work? or would you guys just suggest a fiberglass antenna?
thanks,
joma

What u gonna use cb for? Trail or talkin to trucker bobs? They are dangerous on the trail. Basically a giant whip. I run a 4' wilson flex whip and it does great. Prob 2 1/2-3 mile range. Great on the trail.
Here they r:

i have a 102" fiberglass whip. it's mounted to my rear bumper.
how is it dangerous on the trail? i run tight forest trails all the time, mostly what we have up here. never had a problem, just don't mount it to a spring. and definitely not to your hood.
and no, i don't need to compensate for anything...

i ran one, mounted to the roof rails on the XJ. it was insanely tall, and would hit most trees overhanging on the trail. it was alright i guess, i only ran it because it was cheap and i was tired of the mag mount antennas. seemed to have decent range though.

102 is great for cummunicating. Bad for trails and those who may be spotting you on said trail. Banned at most orv parks because of safety.
Just some other examples of jeepers who also know this:

i say that's all bs. i've never had a problem with my whip coming close to anyone. lol. it's mounted low and with no spring, it sometimes hits the back of my jeep, but never any spotter. lol.
that's just crazy.
i've tried a magnet mount, but got tired of every low tree branch taking it off the roof.
and those smaller wilsons and whatnot are just too stiff and branches always spin them back on their mounts, if they don't just break.
up here we don't have off road parks, really. we have thousands of square miles of crown land and free wheelin. no one to kick you out for having a large antenna. lol.

Magnets are horrible. Thats why i mounted mine to my rig (pic).
The wilson flex whip i run is just that. A flex whip (pic).
I have never personally been to an orv park either. All trails in southern ohio. Tight trails here too. Full width rigs have a tough time gettin through.
Im just sayin wheelin can be precarious enough without 102" of flexible rod floppin around everywhere.
If you are on the highway all the time, go for it. If you ride trails, there is no sense in having 8 1/2' of antenna to talk to a guy 100 away from you.

i have a 102" CB antenna and a 4' Firestick. I had the firestick first but was to lazy to tune it sine I didn't feel like cutting it. So I went ahead and got a 102" from radio shack. I love the 102" whip, looks good if you ask me, and I use it with my friend doing down the road all the time, and when we go wheelin. Have not been anywhere that they made me take it off, but when I do, I still have the firestick, hence why I never returned it. But if you are going to do trails, don't get a 102" whip, get a 4 to 5 foot antenna.
This is an old picture, but the only one I have close to my antenna.
Here is a newer one.

i can see if someone were to joust or fence with one, but come on, mines only sticking up a couple feet over the top of my jeep, even a low branch won't make it snap around.
and if someone is gonna be standing that close to my jeep while i'm wheeling, maybe they deserve to be slapped by it. at least that won't hurt as much as my jeep hitting them. lol.
in all reality, never once in the 10 years or so i've had this mounted, has it ever even been a question while out on the trails.
and it's never even been brought up through the events committee.
i can see maybe if it were to be mounted on one of those silly spring things, that way it could swing sideways where it may strike someone on the side of the trail, but not with it bolted to the mount where it only flops forward and back, but forward it hits the back of my jeep, so no chance there. and back, well even if the tree branch is rubbing my roof as i go under, the antenna may flop back once or so. not enough even if someone was walking right behind my jeep.
totally safe. don't know how they came to that story above, still wondering how the hell it could injure someone...
