COOL HOT WATER
MY PROJECT. I installed a 3 core Aluminum Radiator and Transmission Cooler
. Questions Today on many vehicles have both the engine fan with electric fan , why is this ? Years ago we only used engine fan . Is the size of radiators not big enough they need extra cooling from a fan ??
With my larger radiator is fans necessary??? I ask because it is close to add the fans , more fabrication etc.
Dumb Question. Does these fans blow forward or suck back ???? I never thought to look. If I put them in other locations it would be good to know.
. Thankyou for any thoughts you may have.

You NEED a fan or two. Air flow from jeep forward travel is not enough airflow through radiator except under some circumstances, like on a level stretch of road at 60 mph. Stop and go traffic, steep hills, idling Require fan(s).
Fan should be behind radiator, pulling air through from front to back of radiator.
Do not ignore this info.

The electric fan will fit. I have a huge radiator and it does fit. The question is, what brand fan clutch are you using and are your motor mounts in good condition. In my opinion you need a minimum of 1/2” clearance between the fan clutch and the radiator. You can remove the studs from the fan pulley and use bolts and washers. Like Rob said you need both fans. Post some pictures if you can.

So you did the overheat mod? Go ahead and order a factory replacement radiator for when it keeps overheating with the one you have now.

I have not ran it yet since repairs / replacement is still being done. Simply this the stock radiator developed a leak . I replaced it with a 3 core and transmission cooler becauseI have small trailer I built dome years back with parts from a 48 *****'s 2wd truck. I live inside the Smokey's . Once in a while I need to trailer something in from out of the
mountains. Rare but at the moment I have funds for buying really good stuff so I am.

Stock Fan
A properly working factory radiator and cooling system is what you need, and you can upgrade to a fan clutch from a 4cyl XJ if you need more airflow. Time and time again on here people have put 2 or 3 core aluminum radiators in with electric fans and kept having issues with overheating until they put a factory setup back in.

Factory Radiator Bad.

I do not care much for Pusher Fans especially on this with the AC Unit blocking air flow.
I'm down to a couple choices if I cut the housing in half of the purchased unit I could create a holding bracket to place 2 fans inside the engine compartment, It will be not fun or a second idea comes to mind maybe I going nuts . What if I used a couple huge tubes of JB Weld . Glue them to the back of the radiator. They fit well flat ,clear the fan ,I'm sure it would stay ,glue being in the lil fins . I have a 48 *****'s I did a off chassis rebuild . Mostly in my life I've frowned on doing work like that. But it's a beat up XJ. work vehicle . That thing is plastic ,the new wave that hit us . It would be a hack of a lot easier .

Four cylinder fan and water pump

Is your fan and water pump the 6cyl ?
I found out my water pump and fan is from a Four Cylinder, the fan would not fit the 6cyl water pump. Discovered that after installing it returning it for exchange.

I said fan clutch not fan. A fan clutch for a 4 cyl XJ most certainly does fit the I6 because I have one and it doesn't go on the water pump either. As for your radiator if it was leaking the best thing to do would be to replace it with a factory style radiator, the Spectra ones are pretty good and not that expensive.

Fan Clutch I SEE WHAT IT IS
My 48 *****'s does not have one, guess I will replace it. I did not know about them .After nearly 30 years lock up in FT Leavenworth I missed and forgot much. The three core replacement will stay ,that was near 400 dollars.it stays. That fan Clutch would not fit on the first water pump but water pump fit the engine . I returned exchanged it . The stock electric fan will not fit
