uk newby
hi all new to this forum... ive done some searchin in the past as im plannin on gettin my 1st jeep in may this year... its one my mate owns and hes sellin it so i have a few questions..
its a 1997 grand cherokee 4 litre petrol with gas conversion.. it looks ok and i know hes spend a few quid on it since hed had it.. 2 burnin question tho before i part with my hard earned cash..lol when its m.o.t time can the emissions be done while its runnin on gas because if its emissions are tested while its runnin on petrol the reading are way out and its a failure ( is this a common issue) secondly can anyone guide me to a decent insurance company because im gettin quotes back in excess of 500 quid a year for fully comp and im 48 yrs old... 8 yrs ncb and a clean licence dont live in a dodgy area and the jeep will be parked on the road overnight ... finally.. is there owt i shud be concerned about or lookin for that could give me future grief is i buy this vehicle thanks in advance pete |

Check for rust!!!
Everything else can be sorted, pretty much. I'd go through it and make sure that everything works properly, including the transfer case. I'm guessing it'll be an auto with a 242 transmission so check that you can get in and out of all the modes without issues and don't use 4PT or LO on tarmac unless you stay in a straight line. |
these are the only issues i know with the jeep
heated drivers seat dont work.. aircon needs regassin when its mot'd it has to be run on gas cos the emission result if its on petrol is way off the scale of a pass.. |

as far as for what to look for.. erm i would have to say check floor carpets in footwells for leaks and to give it a good once over, you can tell alot from looking at the oils in my opinion!

If you're satisfied on that score, defo make sure the conversion is certified or you won't have any legitimate insurance! Mine was loaded about 20% for being non-standard but was still around £200, and my cicumstances sound similar to yours; was with Aviva and subsequently Admiral multi-car. HTH |
