I have a 2005 GR CHEROKEE V8 OVERLAND A 4701 CC only had it a year has fair amount of mileage on it. Not knowing how the auto box works I am assuming it has Clutch bands? My problem is I have noticed on occasions if in Second and I hit the accelerator hard it sounds like there is no grip on the bands revs go up but there is no acceleration in speed. After a long drive this disappears, its as if the plates/bands have got fluid on them and is burnt off. Or are the bands on their way out? Or are they adjustable to take up the slack?
or is it something else i should be looking at.

First thing.... what's the condition of the trans fluid that's in there now?
You might start by doing a drain and fill service. And you (if doing it yourself) or ask mechanic to show you condition after pan is dropped. Look for any metallic flakes in the fluid and the pan too.
Let us know condition of fluid first. If you change it... with higher mileage on it, I would say only do a drain and fill, do NOT do a flush. That could go many directions of wrong really fast.

Last year just after I bought the Jeep I had a full service done on it including new fluid and a new filter in the auto box, I did ask the guys at the garage to check for anything nasty, they didn't find any problem.
I am beginning to wonder whether this was why the guy was selling it in the first place he might have noticed it and was told to sell it before the inevitable happened?

Might just plod on for the time being until it gets very noticeable, as I don't think the bands? will just suddenly go on it?
Might have to be an exchange auto-box too as it does have a whine from the box once you get around the 60 mark and above!

Odd my earlier reply has not appeared!
I had the Jeep fully serviced, including replacing the autobox fluid and filter as matter of course, the garage found nothing that indicated there might be a problem.
It may be that the box may need a total referb as its getting noisy over 60 mph, Its had several owners so the history is not known.
If I take it easy and dont hit the go pedal to much it may last some time?

Well the clutch pack discs/bands are constantly bathed it fluid. It could be that they are just starting to wear. No way to tell how long they will last, as anything short of taking the transmission apart will reveal true condition.
How many kms are on it? Not sure exactly how it work in the UK, but in the US and Aus. we have things called TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) Those are put out by the manufacturer of the vehicle that state issues that have been found on specific years/models, and what repair solution has been adopted to fix it properly. Most new car dealerships for that specific vehicle type/brand have access to that info. You could check with them. Some other official repair shops/garages may also have access to that same info. Not sure how it's distributed in the UK. But worth checking into.

Its done over 150k, and as the box is getting noisy I think its a fair bet that its never been apart, As you suggest it might be worth me looking at specs to get a rough idea on just how long the plates last, but again it really depends on whether its seen a hard life.
She still going strong, but the tick over is a bit fast for my liking just have not found that adjustment yet! This might suggest its been hauling something really heavy and they cranked up the tick over to stop it rolling back?
I must admit its a really great 4x4 even the wife likes it!

I live in the south of the UK and in my area we only have one dealership who were not interested when I asked about getting it serviced by them, "Its rather old" basically only interested only in selling new Jeeps and servicing relatively new jeeps.
not much hope of getting decent spec information!
However, I have found somebody who can sort this out before it gives up the ghost!

Sucks that you got that kind of attitude with the dealerships though. Most here across the pond will still service them... but there's a big 4x4 specialty service niche for vehicles like our XJ's....and Jeeps in general as well as other brand 4x4's too.
Sometimes those are best to seek out as that is all they do.
