XJ Dana 44, what are they worth?
I found a couple XJ Dana 44s for sale and I am trying to determine how much they are worth. I currently have a C8.25 27 spline that works but is making some noises and I am not confident in it, so I am thinking of a D44 swap.
First D44 Factory Dana 44 rear axle for a Jeep Cherokee XJ,5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern. It's got 3.55 gears and a Powertrax No-Slip locker in it. Axle had disc brake conversion done as well. Second D44 Factory Jeep Cherokee D44 that is complete with 3.55 gears and drum brakes So how much do you think these are worth? |
1st= 450$
2nd= 250$ That's what I would say is a fair deal. |
In my neck of the woods the first one would run around 300 and the second 150 tops. I just missed out on a deal with one that had the 88 XJ attached to it for 500 and it ran and had a 5" lift and bald 35s. It's all in what people are willing to pay. While they are rare they aren't worth what most people seem to think they are worth. Keep in mind the last year they came in an XJ was 24 years ago so plan on new wheel bearings and seals minimum.

Thanks guys. I am trying to find out if either has had new bearings installed and the condition of each, along with pictures. They have been for sale for at least 2 months so I may be able to get the price down some, he is asking more than what you guys said they are worth, so we will see.

Show up with cash if they won't take a lower price walk away.Most will hit you up later and take the offer you gave if they need money bad enough.
|
the first one sounds nice but I just don't get why people are paying through the nose to get these things. I wouldn't be able to allow myself to pay more than a dime over $300. and even that feels like it's too much. if you can swap in an 8.8 with lsd for cheaper I'd much rather have that

I sold my factory d44 for 200.

Man you got ripped off. Everyone knows XJ D44s are made of platinum and worth 10 hundred million dollars.
I guess I need to start gathering stuff to rebuild my 8.25. I think the bearings are going, and I might as well lock it while I'm in there :thumbup: |
Just get a 29-spline 8.25. Way easier to convert to discs and about as strong as the D44.

I already have a 8.25 in my XJ. When I go to rebuild it since I think the bearings are going, I can always swap to 29 spline shafts, since mine being a '96 I think I have a 27 spline axle. To swap out to 29-spline you need shafts and side gears. MAYBE the carrier but I'm not certain. |

1996 could be either. I always suggest getting another axle as I don't know if this is your DD. A lot easier to rebuild axles when not under a Jeep!
