Wont smoothly drive away 5 speed
 

Hey I am trying to see if you guys know what's the deal with my xj. Pretty much if I try to drive off quick and smoothly with manual I will be bobbing up and down until I press the clutch more. It's not me since I've been driving manuals for my entire driving life. It's a 6" lift And I'm not sure how many miles are on this tranny but if its the original somewhere near 200k then.

Your description is too vague to diagnose your problem, care to elaborate?

ill try but im really have a hard time explaining it. Pretty much instead of only being on the clutch for a very short period "1 sec" and being able to drive away smoothly i have to stay on the clutch otherwise the jeep will literally bob up and down. as if someone was stabbing the gas repeatedly. not sure if that helps, if it doesn't ill try some more or ill make a video.

Six inches of lift? Do you have a SYE? Might be the rear drive shaft binding because of the steep angle it's at.

I would have to agree, although it's different from jeep to jeep. Like where I'm at 7" and I only have 6º shims and I have no vibes and I don't go through U-joints. When I know of cases where just at 4" they've had terrible driveline problems... it could be that binding or too big of tires and 3.07's being too much of a labor on the engine without slipping the clutch some to take off smoothly

i have a 5 speed aswell and on my 2000 mile road trip my jeep was having the exact same symptoms your talking about, did your check engine light come on? mine was the TPS (throttle position sensor) located on the intake it makes your engine act crazy when execrating and trying to maintain speed

CEL has been on for some dumb thing for a while. Truth is it has been working fine for the last 2 years without issues like this. I'll be taking it to the shop next week see if my brother can see what's up.

Which the CEL or the it just started this bit?

Sounds like you are describing clutch chatter, or slipping to me. You just put on large tires with that 6" lift right?
The new rolling weight is too much for your old worn out clutch.

If you feather the clutch till you get the jeep moving, then release it, it is drives fine?

I have the same issue I have to ride the clutches for a long period to get moving fluidly. I just chalked it up to having the bigger wheels and tires compaired to a car with a manual. But I know my clutch disc is going and the pressure plate isn't doing as great of a job as it can.

im tellin u get the CEL checked if its throwing a TPS code repace the sensor its like 15$ and helped mine out drasticly

I had the 33s since I had the jeep. But for the most part is sounds like the clutch chatter might be the problem. I'll read more about it and see what I can determine.
