Default Why do so many feel like their XJ gets bad gas mileage?

Just wondering this... I see many cherokees up for sale with the main reason being that the person supposedly needs a vehicle with better MPG.

Personally, i feel like i get pretty good gas mileage in my 2000.
Even before having the motor rebuilt at 150-some thousand miles, that is one thing I've never had a complaint about with my cherokee. Now that it's been rebuilt, it's even better.

I put around $50 in the tank in an average week, and drive thirty minutes to work and another thirty back home....four days a week... And still have some gas left to fart around town.

I got way worse gas mileage in my '98 Buick regal with the non turbo 3.8.
...which was weird because the.'96 lumina i had before that with the same motor was awesome on gas.

I'd say the cherokee does as good on gas as the lumina did.

Does anyone else NOT see a problem with their XJ gas mileage?

Compared to the past four XJ's I've had, this one is by far the most fuel efficient.

I get a whopping 12 in city, and about 18 on freeway. But then again, I didn't buy it for fuel efficiency. That's why I have a Civic

avt 15 to 16 mpg for me. wish it was better.... but then spending a bunch of money on another car fo milage not so smart. 4 or 5 grand on another beater to run around in buys alot of gas for the jeep and I dont have insurance and maintenance on two vehicles.

Funny cause I traded for a xj to get better gas mileage but I was riding around in an 8mpg city on a good day in my 78 f150 lol

Maybe cause people haven't been able to own a variety of cars. My brothers excursion got 7 MPG and that was highway driving. I love my xj =p

Well it's shaped like a small barn and has a big engine from the stone age. Given those facts I think the XJ does pretty well. I think people panic about mileage. Depreciation is the biggest cost in driving, and you have to save a LOT in gas to cancel it out.

I guess it also depends if you afford the extra gas. I got a full time job which is only 5 minutes away driving. Got no kids. I just pay bills and got my girlfriend (im 22) lolz gas has never been an an issue for me. I can see if you got a family to support plus a mortgage+bills and then I read on here some people driving 45min+ just to go to work. Then I clearly can see the struggle with the MPGs

I've driven practically everything. My favorite car was my '77 Caprice Classic. I used to drive it for work, so it saw around 150-200 miles per day. It had a 35 gallon tank, if I remember right, and I had to fill it up twice a day: in the morning when I left, and then at night, before I headed home. I would dread doing that now... that 350 would've been eating through close to $250 per day!

My Jeep, conversely, does 200 miles on about half a tank. I know this because I make a 200 mile commute every week, once on Sunday morning and again Tuesday night. I used to make the same commute with a '98 Plymouth Neon, which would use three quarters of a tank. Granted, the Jeep has a 20 gallon tank whereas the Neon was twelve gallons, but that still averages out to nine gallons for the Neon versus ten for the Jeep. All things considered I haven't felt like I was taking a hit in mileage since getting the Jeep.

I was going somewhere with this, but I got a bit sidetracked and I don't recall where that was. Either way... it could be better, yeah, but I don't think it's as dreadful as everybody complains about.

People complain that their modified Xjs on big tires get poor mpg's. But thats to be expected. I dont really hear of many complaining about stockers. upper teens mpg for an suv is decent.

That is why I also own a 4 banger beater. That I use for DD mostly. (My current beater is a '94 dodge spirit. paid $500 for, and had it about 6 years) I figure I save about $2500-3000 a year in gas. Also why my '91 (21 year old) limited XJ is only at 71,000 miles right now. Made sense to me!

There are times when 13-15 mpg average really makes me consider how badly I want to keep my XJ, but I stick through it. Once gas hits $5 a gallon this summer, though, I have a feeling I'll have regretted not selling it sooner. It was fine back when my girlfriend still lived in town, but now I'm driving 200 miles round trip every weekend to visit her and that adds up fast.

...you can buy fullsized trucks now that give 30+ mpg. people freak out about mileage because they see the commercials of said truck (or 45+mpg cars) and figure " OMG I'M WASTING MY LIFE ON THIS ALL THIS GASOLINE!!! I don't wanna be the last guy (or gal) to get on the high mpg bus!." So they run out and sell their 15-20 mpg vehicle, or trade up for the aforementioned 30+mpg unit from the latest manufacturer with the latest commercial that makes them feel really emotional/stupid about the current vehicle that they are stupid for driving and destroying the planet with. And exhale....

I actually have a stock XJ and my average is 14.5-15 MPG with mixed city/hwy driving. I'm not complaining, but I have seen on here that lifted XJ's with big tires are getting better MPG's than I am.

Keep up on maintenance beyond just oil changes and XJs will get fuel economy as good as most cars out there today.

What full size trucks are actually getting 30 plus mpg that aren't diesels?

Well I got my first XJ after driving a full size GMC sierra (94) I got maybe 8mpg at its best. (It had issues)

So my 91s 12-15mpg was a welcome thought.

On my 99 I got a peak of 26mpg. That was a nonstop tank of gas though all highway. It had a CAI new fluids, glasspack muffler and accel tune up on it at the time. I think the wind helped me.

Anyways for a 4x4 small SUV it does what I need it to.
