I'll be the first to admit, I'm a Jeep supremist. "Nuthin' beats a Jeep", right? I'd really like to get one of those H2 RECOVERY TEAM stickers. However, I've just been going off of my own opinion. I need to know what really makes a jeep better for off roading? What is special about the drivetrain that makes them capable? I've heard talk about the vacuum actuated diff locker and the like, is this something unique to Jeep? Give me some info guys. I need some basis for my pride!

Jeep boasts a heritage that no one else can even come close to.

Land Rover copied many of the design characteristics of the M51 after WW2 based on the original MA, MB, and GPW's.

Toyota followed suit with their LandCruisers.

Jeeps have been copied, but never duplicated.

That being said, skip the Hummer Recovery sticker until you've actually done it....seriously.

I really don't consider myself a Jeep-snob, but I do take considerable pride in my rig. I have to remind my son (also an XJ owner) that it's not what you wheel, it's how you wheel it that matters.

Thank you! I agree with all that you said. BUT, what specifically has been copied or borrowed by Land rover and toyota? I'm a mechanical designer by trade so I need info on mechanical pieces and assemblies. Thanks again!

P.S. I agree with what you said about the sticker. I wouldn't actually dream of putting it on my jeep until I'd actually done the task. I hate posers with stickers.

You can put a lift on a H2 or H3 and put on larger tires, heavy duty bumpers, winches, and recovery points and still out wheel it with a XJ on a 2 inch budget boost. The Hummers just do not have enough flex in the suspension to allow them to navigate the trails as well. Plus you have to take into account the excessive size of the Hummers and the horrible agility off road. Try turning a H2 around on a narrow trail.

Ahem.....

FWIW, I've tried The Escalator twice and taken a winch twice.

Good, good, these are mechanical things that make a Jeep superior.

So far we have:

1. Small, agile size
2. Long travel suspension which allows flex

Anything else? Drivetrain? Engine?

My favorite thing about my jeep that put it over the edge from buying anything else is the staight axle up front, and the abilty to mod it very easily

from 84' to 99' they make the popular High Pinion Dana 30, which allows the stock front CV driveshaft to fit to about 6" of lift

throught 91' they have vacuum disconnect but they make kits to bypass it.

IMO 87' to 01' have the best T-case, (np231,Np242)

Alot of stock parts are good on jeeps after lift.

And im sure parts are cheaper(price wise) then a Hummer

+1 on the straight axle.

It allows much more flex than any other system, and jeeps are still, to this day made with them, you gotta go back in the 80's to find straight axles on toyotas.... Hummers simply were never made with a straight axle.

Great points, all!

Please satisfy my ignorance, what is this vacuum disconnect that you speak of? What is it's purpose? What are the differences in models of axels and trasnfer cases?

All you need to say about a Jeep is "anything you can do, I can do better."

IMO i like the jeep for its originality (no its not a word) it was the first of its kind.....before there was hummer...there was JEEP....it almost sounds biblical.
Also why would I want to spend 40,000+ to wheel when i paid less than 2000 for both of my xj's and I'm not afraid to put a scratch on one of them.
Also being a motor-t mech i think the H2, H3 are sorry representations of the hmmwv.

Owning a jeep is a statement of who you are.It says I like being out side and am not afraid of getting dirty. This is my sixth one I love jeeps.
