Default What motor.

I'm about to get a 99 Xj with no motor and I'm wondering what is the best year motor to be looking for to replace it? The old motor is gone so ill have to get connectors more than likely. Any advice is well appreciated.

4.0L Inline 6 of course. I wouldn't ever go with a different motor in a Jeep.

any 91-01 i6 motor will work, 99 has the better intake on it. Stay away from 00-01.

The heads on those years of motor are prone to cracking with even the slightest overheat.

And they are distributorless.

If your jeep is 99.5 or older i would look for a 91 to 99.5 motor. If you have a 99.5 and later i belive the exhaust ports might be a little bit smaller. Havent looked into it in a while.

IDK much about changing motors. But how much would it cost for someone to do it for me or how difficult is it to do it?

Around here you can get a motor at the JY for around $100, but it only includes the block, cylinder head, valve cover, and internals. You're shelling out more for the manifold, intake, fuel system, fly wheel, ect. Are you just missing the motor or are you missing everything that bolts to it as well?

Check craigslist, I see 4.0s on there fairly often for pretty cheap.

As for how easy, it depends on the person. The 4.0 is pretty easy to work on and pretty easy to remove/install. Lucky for you all you have to do is drop one in which isn't exactly hard. I've seen people who've never done one do it in a day.

Though personally, if I was getting the Jeep for free I wouldn't hesitate to drop $2000 or so on a remanned motor. Save a lot of headache and hassle and you're getting a new motor in a vehicle that you would otherwise have spent even more on for one with 100k+ miles on it.
