what is a good winch?
#20
Hi folks, I am about to buy a winch for my XJ and stepped in to ask y'alls folks oppinion. I have already made up my mind that I'll go with Warn. But there are actually 2 options I consider - either that M Premium or VR Entry level. I also looked through that comparison of best winch for jeep xj. They say that M Premium is better, though I do not really feel what the real difference is about the way it works. Any help is appreciated, as I plan to order mine this weekend.

Doug, it can be hard choosing, and some winches are WAY overpriced (Warn, LOL)...keep on reading threads, find out what will suit your needs, then choose accordingly. Also, while Warns are higher priced, they are the industry leader, so take that for what it's worth. They have an excellent reputation. Smittybilt also has some good stuff, and I've even known people with HF winches that swear by them...

Hey, at least he's reading the posts and looking for answers elsewhere, not like he started a new thread. Kinda harsh, man.

i can only wish i had the opportunity to buy an 8274, they are the quintessential of all winches.
i only have the warn M8000. don't get me wrong, it is a very good winch. i've had it longer than i've owned a jeep. so about 16 years, never been serviced, and still pulls strong whenever i need it.
but, i won't just pull cable to get anyone unstuck, that's what straps are for. only time i use my winch is if a strap won't work due to run space, or if it's my own jeep i'm pulling. i didn't spend a thousand bucks to pull everybody else out.
a winch is a SELF-RECOVERY tool after all. and almost always use a ****** block. they're less than a hundred bucks and reduces so much of the strain put onto the winch itself. it also lines the cable so it's pulling straight off the drum, and not sideways, unless you have no choice.
go WARN and don't look back.

I can tell you that I've had nothing but problems with my milemarker. First, the solenoid decided to be a nuisance and caused a big parasitic draw. New solenoid is around $130 bucks. No thanks. Next, the motor seized. I can't fully blame this on the winch being as I don't run a cover on it which I most certainly will be on my next one But I would think they'd seal the housing enough so RAIN won't get in. I've never put it under water.
I couldn't agree more with CAGED about a winch being a SELF-recovery tool. XJ's aren't good for recovering other rigs and I won't pull other people out unless it's a friend with either a non JK wrangler or another XJ. Anything bigger and you're asking for damage.

WARN M8000s Platinum is what I want. 100 feet of Warn Spydura synthetic rope, electric-powered winch that can provide reliable service for intermittent utility and recreational use. lots of power. Great in the woods. Easy to handle. Pretty easy to install.

When choosing a winch, the first thing to ask is if you want good line speed. There are slow and fast winches. I have a Milemarker I got a good deal on, that didn't work when I needed it. Wife was with me and said, "Get a good one". Bought the Warn 9.5ti. Now to be fair, I kicked the Milemarker around on the shop floor and threatened to take it apart and fix it. It decided to work. Apparently stuck brushes. Nothing a big hammer won't fix on the trail. But getting back to line speed, a good compromise is probably the SuperWinch. They have higher line speed and lower price. Can't beat a Warn warranty though
