Red face What gears should i get?

I have a 1995 cherokee that has some problems maintaining speed up a hill. I can get it to go about 35-40mph on the highway going uphill, then i start smelling it over-heating. I know the over-sized tires have a little to do with it. But would 4.10s help any? pretty sure its got 3.08s in it right now...Help from a jeep girl in need! :]

The 4.0 seems to make good power around 2500 rpm and above.

Use these to figure out what you need for gear ratio.

http://www.ringpinion.com/Calculators/Calculators.aspx

Edit: try using the RPM one, that seems to be what you'll need.

you choose gears based on tire size / engine / transmission

look here to figure out which gears you have
http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html

general guidelines for 4.0 engine with automatic transmission
31" tire = 4.10 gear
33" tire = 4.56 gear
35" tire = 4.88 tire

google it lol. almost all gears on the market are made with the same materials in the same fashion. spend about $150 for your front axle gears, and maybe $180 for the rears. any more than that and it better come with a damn good warranty

If by good you mean they are easier to install and set up, then sure they are.

Im running US standard gears (considered to be the "cheap" set of gears)
and you'll never know what brand of gears I am running...

Some say yukons are quieter and dont "whine" on the highway as much. but the square body of the xj causes enough wind noise where you wont hear that "whine" anyways.

really? no one warranties gears? I know Yukon covers all defective products. but I guess if your ring breaks, good luck proving it was the companies fault right?

Ive never questioned it, ive only broken a dana 30 and 44, both times at the hammers. Those exploded gear sets would probably fit into the "abuse" category

If you know something that I dont about someone who warranties gears please post it, that'd be worth spending the extra money for.

Sorry for the hi jack walla jeep girl

You may have other issues too. I have had 35's on mine for a little bit now with the stock gears. It is a dog but there is no overheating. If your is overheating under load, it isn't just because of the tires or gears.

USA standard is a "subset" of Yukon. Alloy USA is a different brand entirely. I also have the USA standard gears. I agree with the other posts on here, the gearing probably isn't the problem with your overheating.
