What is a fair price for this...?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/2118046793.html

I am looking to get my first XJ. Been searching Craigslist. Feeling a little overwhelmed with what is out there.

I called the guy in this add. Seemed like a good dude. But the price for this 98 with 136k miles @ $4500, seems like a bit much.

Hoping you all can give me some good advice on what kind of offer to make? Assuming everything is as good as he says it is in the add. Or is this a fair price?

Thanks for you help.

That's about right... the guy wants as much as he can get sounds like... make him an offer of $3500, see what he says?

Based on the info he gave in the ad, KBB private party is $2800 for Chicago. Problem is, like most people, he thinks he can ask retail (dealer price) and get it as a private seller. KBB retail is only $4200 so he's still asking over that. If it's in as good of shape as he says and has maintenance records on it, tell him what the KBB is and offer $3200. If he takes it he's smart. If not, his loss on not getting $400 over the true book value.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same thing. But I'm pretty new to this and wanted some help on figuring a fair offer. I don't want to be that guy throwing out some low ball offer. But I also don't want to be the other guy that he laughs about with his friends on how he screwed me over.

I will call him again tomorrow to maybe set up a time to check it out in person. And if he doesn't even want to consider a lower offer, then I'm outta there.

Thanks again. Hopefully I can find something soon.
