What did you have to do when you bought it
... to make it at least, somewhat, reliable?
When I bought mine, the fuse block under the hood, was smoking when I stopped for gas, after the cash/car exchange was done. I paid 11 hundo for it. I pulled the cover off and found a fuse on fire, so I pulled it and noticed that there was wire wrapped around the legs to act as a fuse. Started her right back up and turned everything back on and everything was working. Drove it home and it died just as I put it in Park, at home. Found out it was one of the fuses for the ALT.
Took car of the fuse, cleaned and reseated the contacts.
Never got a CEL so I pulled the dash apart and found majority bulbs missing/burned out. Replaced them. Imagine that! CEL light comes on.
... code was for Coolant temperature sensor (first thing I noticed before I bought it, the only part under the hood that didn't have dirt, grease or grime on it). He told me that he just replaced it. Moving forward, I peeled back the wire loom from the sensor and one of the wires were cut/ripped. Fixed that and started her up and the CEL went away.
Replaced cyclinder head gasket
Exhaust manifold
Heater core
Blower motor
Blower motor resistor
Engine mounts
Wheel hub assemblies
O2 sensor
Passenger side window track
Multiple bushing; still need to install front bumpstops
Water coming in through antenna hole; threw some silicon in there and took care of that.
Radio did not work at all; pulled it out of dash and cut all the wiring, then rewired per Jeep diagram and head unit. WAH LAH! Works like a charm.
Interior lights did not work, found a pinched wire.
Both passenger seatbelts (outer) were cut in half. Replaced those!
A few other things left on the list and hope I can get to/afford to do them, before it's too late... water pump (picked up today) and flex plate (bolts welded in place, one bolt missing with a weld bead taking it's place).
When all is said and done, then I can start working on the little things that are just minor. Beyond that, then I can start thinking about lifting it.

It had 1 blown u joint on the driver side front. Other than that it was running pretty darn well. Fresh fluids, plugs, wires, new shocks & springs, etc have made it run alot nicer but she ran for 6+ months untouched minus that u joint.

I had to change the alternator and replace the headlight switch to make it DD worthy. Ive done a ton of other little things to try and make it better though. I think most older jeeps are works in progress. I have a list for this spring a mile long. LOL.

Let's see... changed all fluids and filters, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, brake pads and shoes, grease everything and replace the vacuum line to the MAP, replaced one headlight and both brake light bulbs.

Tune-up, headlights (moisture inside) and a cracked turn signal lens is all it needed. Tires are old, but I didn't care because the ones I looked at either had cheap new tires or worn out tires and I''m going to swap them with 31" tires anyways. I looked a a lot of Cherokees where I could count $1000.00 worth of work in about 5 minutes so I figured if that much was neglected then I'm going to find out a lot more stuff than that.
People just drive them until they're worn out and need a couple thousand dollars worth of work, then we get them and bring them back to life.

-Add 1.5 gal coolant (Yes it was really that low, I was amazed it didn't overheat on the drive home), and later replace the water pump and radiator as they both had slow leaks (while I was at it I replaced the hoses, belt, idler, etc. since I didn't know when they were last replaced).
-Replace rear drive shaft u-joints, they were noisy, and when I pulled them out almost dry (old u-joints were non-greaseable).
-Change all fluids (none of them looked that bad but I do that on any vehicle if I don't know when they were last done).
-valve cover gasket
-Plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
-Blower Motor Resistor
-Replace cracked passenger side tail-light and worn brake-peddle rubber pad (for inspection).
- adjust drag-link to center steering wheel.

I bought my Jeep from a junkyard. It was in a front end collision
I had to pull the left fender straight and slap on some fenders and a hood.
Got a radiator, etc and installed everything.
