There was no reason for her to stop, there was nothing in front of her, and nothing blocking the road. The damage is fixable, but I don't currently have the money or time to fix it. Bumper brackets were rusty and broke apart, bumper pushed into the fenders and bowed them, grill and header panel cracked, radiator busted, but as far as I can see no buckling of the frame or inner fenders or anything. I plan to fix it when I get the time/money.
Damn that sucks to read. Sorry to hear that dude.

Yes, my passenger and I are both fine, no cuts or bruises or anything. Definitely needs a new bumper, but I'm hoping (probably won't be possible, but a boy can dream) that when I pull the bumper off I can get the fenders back straight. There aren't any creases, just gentle bows. It's really not that bad, but more than I have time or money for at the moment. First of all... glad that everyone is okay..... sorry to hear of the damage to your baby....

I do have to say something though..... if that was close to 50 mph when you hit the crazy panic "deer in the headlights" driver in front of you... that would've been more than enough to completely total most newer vehicles on the road.
Just one more reason in the "plus" column for why Jeeps rock.

^^ I really love those things...but so hard to find them anymore it seems. And the very few I have seen were just beat into the ground.

I'm sure it would be totaled if it was up to insurance, but I only have liability on it, not full coverage so it's up to me whether it gets fixed or not. Did yours have any frame damage or just cosmetic? And wasn't it rear ended? The hard/expensive parts to find?

I don't have a picture handy, but the only visible damage was one side of the front bumper was pushed in about 3/4"

Well do you think it's too crazy of an idea to fix it? Too far gone or too much $$$? I mean personally I can't see that any of the structure seems to be compromised, and I feel capable of the repairs it needs. I hope to get enough of my work done this weekend to make it back home Sunday or Monday and pull it apart some to see if there is more hidden damage or not. I will admit I have never fixed damage from a wreck before and don't know entirely what it will entail, but I think it's worth trying to save.

I definitely could've fixed mine, but I didn't get the option. I'm not discouraging your plans at all, so I apologize if my message was unclear. I was primarily replying to the notion that these old Jeeps are more resistant to damage than newer cars

You're fine, and why wasn't there an option?

I bought my first XJ that looked a lot worse and I was able to fix it up. You can too.

^^^ you hit on perfect case and point with that comment......
It has always been a big concern for me with the older Jeeps like our XJs... because while they are a great 4x4 platform.... they are soooo undervalued by ins. companies that if it were to become totaled/stolen, etc. that it would be like a complete write off as you would basically get nothing for it.
Now we all know every vehicle out there depreciates rather quickly it seems.... but if you had say 7-10 grand into a build and something happened... then the ins company says... per book value... here's a check for $1500 bucks (if you're lucky)... have a nice day.
Hell.. it's like staring down the business end of a 12 gauge shotgun with the safety off.
I love my Jeep.. but some days and things like that do spook me a bit with it.
