In retrospect, would it have been cheaper to sell your 2x4 and buy a jeep that was already 4x4? Just curious..

4x4 conversion is easy and cheap with the unibody. Just need a 4x4 trans, transfer case, and drive shaft, can be had for pretty cheap.

Almost certainly, but then he wouldn't have 'his' Jeep. It's cheaper to buy one that's built up in the first place, but that's no fun

How about the electronics? Is it all just plug & play? Like, is there a Part Time/Full Time indicator already installed in the 2wd dash? I always thought about converting my 2wd, but eventually bought a 4x4. If it's as easy as you say, perhaps I already have my next project!

All the electronics are there. You can see the places where part time and full time are supposed to be.

In retrospect it could have been cheaper, but I got my 2wd xj with 130k miles for $500. The conversion overall cost around $300 or so buying all the parts and about 20 hours with 3 fellas in a shop with air tools and one floor jack who have never done it before. Everything bolted right up, the only issues we have are a bolt broke in my manifold so I don't have my exhaust right now, the o2 sensor was the wrong fit I guess so off the the jy, and I have the wrong front yolk from a yj(got my tcase from a yj)

JY O2 sensor could well be bad. It's a 60k mile replacement part, IIRC.

Prepared the fronts for trimming. Also cut and folded a little tab of metal on the inner fender that was cutting my fenders at full lock. Lastly, removed the inner fender mat that was falling down.
