Hell yeah brother! On my to-do list is to build a replacement engine for my rig before it needs it, then do the swap in one weekend.
I am considering doing the same. Build one before it might be needed for my '00. Been talking with my buddy about doing it. Picked up a TUPY head awhile back for $50. Popped up on Craigslist a couple towns over. No idea of the condition. Could just be a door stop but grabbed it anyway. Figure I will wait till I send in my oil for analysis in April and see what they say. Go from there. Been poking around trying to get an idea of how to approach a build. Don't want a stroker but a tweak here and there would be nice. My buddy can build the motor but is not a Jeep guy so what to use for parts is on me.
Thanks. It's pretty much stock and low mileage too - 132,000 km or about 82,000 mi. It's actually had more taken off than put on. It's a fully loaded Limited model. The previous owner removed all of the original gold badges, wheels and the running boards ... which is exactly what I would have done! I'll be replacing the badges with the more common chrome ones. It was partially repainted and word "Limited" and the pinstriping, both gold, was removed (good!). The rocker cover still has hints of gold on it and I'll get rid of that too. The original bumpers and grille were white and they were replaced. The only thing added was an updated radio.
Put the new oil pressure sending unit in and a new air filter. Did the oil and filter last weekend and getting the oil filter off I brokje the sending unit plug in off the end causing a leak and crazy oil pressure readings on the gauge. $64.00 screw up!

You and steathy should do it. I am going to write up a tutorial on how to build a 4.0 when I am done with mine to show everyone how easy and cheap it is. As long as you have a good machine shop, building the engine is simple and you dont really need any fancy tools to do it. I should be in mine around $300 in parts besides the head and machine work.

That would be great. Been wondering if I should invest in those 4.0 engine books I see on Amazon.
Even though mine is an '00 I am leaning towards trying to find a '99 engine to work with. Since I have the TUPY head, hopefully is good or rebuildable, can turn a distributor motor into the distributorless one. Or so I have read. Logic being the '00 have the 0331 heads. They crack. The coolant get down there and destroys all the bearings. Thinking the guides must take a beating too. Meaning more machine work. Realize I am pretty clueless but does that even remotely make sense?

This engine I am building is for my 2000. It had every possible problem due to a cracked head. The PO had it "repaired" but they never checked the head for cracks, then replaced the head gasket, did a valve job and slapped it back together. Well the head was still cracked, PO didnt notice or bother to check and it ruined pretty much everything. So my rebuild is one of those worst case scenarios. Trust me when I say that I will be covering all bases.
I lubed all the Zerks on the front end and checked everything to make sure there are no suspension issues. Everything looks good, but Mr Jeep told me he is ready for a lift. Couple more months... Also went to the swap meet here. They have a vendor there that makes custom die-cut stickers. I honestly had a brain fart and could not come up with something funny. So I ended up having them make this sticker. At least it is accurate.

I have a 96 Country that I'm restoring. It was stock and hadn't had any modification still in pretty good condition when I got it ten years ago. It has 192k on the clock. Mine is white as well.
