VHT Nightshade

hello everyone im looking to tint my taillights. from what ive read vht is the best stuff to use but im a little unsure on how to do it. yes ive searched but everyone does it a little different and i dont want to screw it up im thinking: first-wetsand with 2000grit sandpaper
second- wipe with paint thinner
third- spray vht. light coats 10minutes apart
fourth-clear waiting 5 minutes between coats
fifth- wetsand with 2000 grit
sixth- rub with a compund and then polish?
does that sound right? and i dont need to hear the tinting your tailights is dumb talk

:help:

You may do what ever you want to do to your vehicle, I my self wouldn't tint them. Because I don't want to give any reason for the mostly unpleasant police dept. To pull me me over. They are suppose to be visible at a certain distance at night. And I certainly don't want to argue with him, What his interpation of that law is.

The police in the states don't seem to care, in my opinion as loads of pics with tyres sticking out uncovered, blue lights fitted, doorless, gun in glovebox, and dead deer on the hood (bonnet) so light shades seem not worthy of a tug by the old bill that I see.

Sprayed mine with Windex, then did a few coats of VHT, came out great. Been through a lot of mud and washes and still looks great. Didn't use a clear coat, either.

No need to do all that sanding all i did on mine is sand them with 300 clean, with rubbing alcohol 2 or 3 light coats then clear.
Here is a picture of my corner lights. You can still see the original color of the lens and the light shine throw just fine and i havent killed any babys yet like some people will tell you lol

I wetsanded my old ones and they ended up coming out mattte looking. Its also kinda hard to do even coat per coat. The way I did it was 1 coat but side to side even spraying until it got as dark as I wanted. Would have came out nicer if I didnt wetsand.

Power73 09-22-2012 01:36 PM

thanks maybe i shouldnt wetsand then. :help:anyone else have any input? want to get this done today yet

I did this on my ZJ, tails and corners, I did no sanding or clear coats and it turned out awesome. Just make sure you clean them before you start spraying

I wet sanded with 1500 to help get letters and such (part numbers, etc stamped into the lamps more so the front markers than the tails.)
Then wet sanded with 2000
Cleaned them really good with tar remover prep stuff
I initially tried following directions and doing multiple coats. And no matter what I did it turned out splochy. So I got all the tint off with thinner. And did one very light spray let it dry a lil til it was still tacky. Then I layed down one thicker coat. Just be careful not to make it too thick because it won't work like its supposed to, and it will run.

Once it was on and dry to touch I hit them all with clear coat including the taped off reverse lights.

This was with Duplicolor Lens tint btw. Its really the same ****, its pretty much just black candy paint with adhesion promoters for plastic.
