Vehicles with the 4.0?
Just a quick question. What other non-jeep vehicles came with our beloved 4.0? I would imagine Chrysler would have used such a good motor in some of their other brands.... Thanks for the info!

Some variation of the engine was used in several AMC vehicles, but I don't know any other Chrysler vehicles that used it. All the other platforms had been phased out before Chrysler took over production.

Chrysler bought amc just for the jeep line the rest they canned off fast. The older amc stuff did run the 4.2 inline 6 which is kinda the 4.0s older brother.

The 4.0 was one of the most underutilized engines in American automotive history. Chrysler could have put it in the Dakota, Ram, Durango, and probably sold it to other manufactures the way Ford did with their 300. Essentially, what they're doing now with the Pentastar with great success, the 4.0 could have accomplished and probably helped them not have such a crappy business after Daimler left which lead them to be bought by the Italians.
Emissions still would have killed the engine in 06. |
5 million 4.0s were made. Maybe more.
Some were sold to foreign countries for use on equipment also. |
As far as I know these were the only vehicles with the 4.0:
-198?-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ -199?-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ -1997-2006 and 2004.5-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ -1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ -1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ The last vehicles to use it were the 2005 Jeep Wrangler TJ and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ. As far as I know, no other vehicles used it, it was a Jeep engine, developed for Jeeps by its parent company American Motors Corporation (AMC), which the Chrysler Corporation bought out in 1987 and phased out the AMC line (they bought AMC for Jeep). The first vehicles to use the 4.0 were the Jeep Cherokee XJ's in the mid-late 1980s. |
