Default Towing a Toy Hauler with an XJ

I have a 2000 XJ with a 3.5" lift riding on 31's. I have a class III on the back and a trans cooler on the front. What would be the heaviest I could tow without any problems? I do a fair amount of dirt biking up in the Sierras so there will be grades to deal with.

I have a 96 4.0 and I pull my 17x52 jet boat to the river and I don't have a problem..you will just have to take it easy and drive with sense..but it sure don't pull like my hemi that's for sure!

Any idea what the gross weight your pulling is?

I realize the XJs no Hemi but then again I'm single and typically only take 2 bikes with me. I simply don't need a huge toy hauler and I'm reluctant to buy a bigger tow vehicle if what I have now will work. Whats the max the Cherokee can tow anyway? I've read 5000lbs but I have no idea if that's true or not.

Your jeep will pull that weight easy. Stopping it is the problem. You only have a class 3 hitch, which I think is rated for 3500 lbs. You will be fine with 3500 lbs just take it easier on the jeep, pay attention more and start stopping sooner. Be sure to leave more space between other cars.

Even though it may be rated for that i would upgrade your bakes and it also depends on your gearing in your axels I would want at least 4:11 and put a trany temp gauge. I burned up a trany in my 03 superduty and I was within my tow rating

You'll be fine. I put a class IV hitch on mine and every now an then I tow cars for an old dealership I worked for. Biggest I pulled was a Grand Cherokee and even on the hills it did good enough.

Thanks for the input everyone. You've given me some things to think about.
