Okay, okay.

Check the wiring where it passes through the rubber boot into the hatch. Wires there can break inside the insulation, so a visual inspection is not enough. Also, a continuity check with a meter may be misleading because you might have an intermittent connection, or you may have a single strand unbroken, which will give a good continuity test, but will not conduct enough current to light the light.
