Strapping canoe to factory roof rails
Has anyone strapped a canoe to their factory roof rails? or do yall even think that they could handle a 13 foot coleman canoe? Im looking to buy one but im not sure about it unless im confident I dont have to screw around with a trailer or fancy racks.
edit: i have the half length rack if that changes opinions on if this would work or not

Check to see that if you remove the wind dam if you could tie to the bumper brackets. Or go with a front end receiver hitch(don't know the year of your XJ).

old style gutter mount roof rack for $50 will solve this.
if you had the year and make and model in your sig, we'd know if you have tow hooks or not.

The best way to secure the front of the canoe is to hood loops.

I also strongly recommend using gunwale brackets or load stops on your rack to better secure your canoe laterally. I have Thule gutter cross bars and use regular load stops because gunwale brackets are more expensive and aren't useful for as many different things.

Strap it to the factory rails, as well as to the rear hitch and a set of hood loops noted in the prior post. Load stops will be nice as well but you'll get by fine without them. Have fun!

Picked up the canoe tonight and thanks to you all it went super smooth!
Drove it nearly an hour between Lincoln & Omaha Nebraska with out a hitch. Now its time to get out on the water.
