Default Speedo Gear O-ring Problem

Yesterday I noticed a red liquid dripping from my transfer case from the area where my Speedometer gear goes. I pulled it out to find a broken o-ring. A friend and I put a new o-ring on and I woke up this morning only to find more fluid dripping.

Is this a common problem and does anyone know a fix?

Did you use the correct size oring? Did you lube it before installing the speedo gear?

I'm not sure if he lubed it up, maybe just kind of dabbed it with some of the ATF dripping from the transfer case and rubbed it on there.

The o-ring may or may not be the correct size, but it came out above the plastic a very good deal and would create what I thought to be air-tight. I found the leak at around 1 AM when I noticed a shiny substance on the ground from the garage light, so no stores were even open to look for the right size o-ring. I suppose that will be my project today.

Alright so I lubed it and replaced it. Twice. Both new o-rings have failed to keep it from leaking. Any suggestions?

Someone recommended sealing it with Permatex hylomar blue. I'm going to check around for that stuff and give it a try.

Use rtv black for sealing things up. Works the best.

I've seen those plastic housings crack causing a mystery leak.

It appears the ATF stopped leaking on its own. I didn't lose all of it because I checked the dip-stick and everything looks good. I'm wondering if maybe the leaking I saw after replacing it a second time was just the finger fluid I used to lubricate the o-ring. It's pretty much bone dry now. If this stays like this, I might get to finally save a little money
