Spare Tire Carrier & License Plate Re-Location
So I just purchase a rear bumper/spare tire carrier combo and am curious to know where and how others have re-located their rear license plate, pictures would be great? The manufacturer sells a re-location kit, but a side of me thinks just attaching the plate to the wheel would be fine. However then I would not have the license plate light... should I really care? Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing when I was debating what to do with my rear plate. I picked up the relocating bracket from Tomken (I have their bumper & swing out tire carrier). I figured using their setup everything came with the kit & it'd be cheaper to pay +/- $50.00 rather than buying each individual part. Not using a light on my plate would just be an excuse for the local PD to pull me over. Didn't need the attention. just my $0.02 though.

depends what tire carrier you have. my tire was mounted high and out of the way so i was able to just slightly relocate it. just made some tabs on the tube, the stock license plate light still lit it up just fine at night.

Depending on your tire carrier, here's a relatively easy way to keep it near the stock location.

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions, ideas and photos. Since I am getting ready to leave on a trip and have little time to fabricate as I am in the process of trying to install my rear bumper and tire swing, I went ahead and ordered the re-location kit. I should have it on Monday

Not all police officers know all the vehicle laws (No offense to any members here, that are in law enforcement. There is good, and bad people in every profession) I once got stopped for having a stinger exhaust, on a Baja bug. She (female officer) tried to tell me, You can't have an after market exhaust. Especially sticking up past the rear window. Has to be org. equipment. The ticket was ripped up the next day at the police station. She also wanted to site me for white blinkers, no seat belts (didn't have my racing bucket and harness in yet) , cut fenders (they where 3/4 length fiberglass) and too high off the ground. It was a 1960 bug, they didn't even think of seat belts or yellow blinkers then. She was not a friendly person. Oh ya, the hood had 2/3 cut off, up to the lic plate holder. (exposing the motor)

Spare Tire Carrier & License Plate Re-Location: Final Result
Thought I would post the finished product. The bumper/tire swing combo is the Rockhard 4x4 and so I decided to purchase their license plate bracket and light relocation kit. It also includes a brake light which I decided to hook-up.

I bought this:

and a bell LED license plate light and wired it to the original light and just put the plate on the side of the hatch that the tire doesn't cover.
