hello all,
im looking for a dedicated 4x4. i used to have a 95 cherokee sprt and by far was the best 4x4 ive owned. im in maryland and looking to go historic tags so as of now the jeep would need to be 1990 or older. ive heard bad things about the 2.8, had a 4.0( was a power house). what was the first year jeep put the 4.0 into the cherokee? and how are the 2.8's actualy? thanks for the advice and info.

im not 100% on this but i think 88 was the first 4.0. i could be wrong. stay away from the 2.8 theyre dogs. ive had a few

very true about the only dumb question. yeah ive heard the 2.8's prety much sucked. only other options ive been looking at are suburbans,full size blazers, and bronco's. ive had all of them in the past. jeep is still better.

never buy something you dont really want.. if you want a jeep.. get one.. there are millions of them out there.. and millions in JY for parts...

first year of the 4.0 is 87. mine is an 87 and i have a 4.0 and its great. i also used to have a 95 sport and loved it too

i got a 92 with a 98 engine.. and Its my first jeep.. and i love it.. I had a turbo supra... it was very fast... but im very impressed with the 200 ponys the jeep has.. it will literly light the 31s up for 50 feet... and it really does not like going fast on hwy.. 70-75 is all i will run her on hwy... i had supra past 145 several times.. Now thats behind me.. and wont be getting any tickets for going 2x the speed limit.. on hwy now.. Didnt in supra eather.. but sure came close.... the L6 is stong reliable and sure is alot of them for parts..:} Hope you find what you looking for..

87 is the first year of the 4.0.This is my second Cherokee,but my 6th jeep.I love em.

well the 2.8s are early 80s GM motors..ill let that speak for itself

well, as everyone stated, the 1987.

and i tell ya, i love my '95 Sport! such an awesome machine!

As stated numerous times, the 4.0 came out in 87, but it was a Renix engine. In 91 they came with the "High Output" motor which had 13 more horsepower and seemed to be easier to work on than the Renix model. So if you can, find something with a swapped out HO motor.
