how is the thread ruined? there's plenty of sound advice on here. I've asked plenty of questions like that and learned through experience that you really have to go somewhere safe and figure it out yourself. First time I drove in the snow I was just very careful and took a couple times to slam the brakes and get a feel for how to recover from a skid. Driving in the snow is more common sense than anything, drive at a safe speed, pay attention, and give yourself plenty of space.

not you zachsxj, its the people like destro. driving in snows condtions is serious business, do you know how many people die on mountain passes like hwy 26 on hood and as an emt, seeing that S##t is gnarly! ok!

ya and **** for saying Bite me I have no problem with people aking for advise even if they have never done something, I gave advise, and it was a good thread giving good advise to people who dont drive in the snow much. so what is your problem, I was refering to the people saying just lay on the gas pedal. I have no problem with you

exactly, were on the same side man. as a fire fighter, sometimes the winter brings the worst accidents out and the worst tragedies. what profession are you in that you see victims?

I don't see victims, I just live and drive in a highway safety corridor. Accidents are sadly the norm because people around here drive like total douchebags. I spent some time volunteering at a rescue squad and I'm currently in the process of hunting down a class so I can get my EMT-B and get a job with the local Ambulance Company.

good job way too service humanity, I got my EMT B in june and have been with fire and rescue since. its awesome and I highly recoment it. thats Y I said ruined thread about people that say " just lay on th e skinny pedal" catch my drift? but i think were starting a tangent thread

Well I thought it was funny, if you don't then whatever.
There was plenty of good advice on how to really drive in the snow- my "advice" came from a horrible drive to work in the snow yesterday and it seems like that is how people actually think they should drive.
For real advice- go slow and if you are not used to driving in the white stuff go out to a vacant parking lot (try and find one without light posts!) and get some practice controlling a skid.

we just got about 12 inches dumped on us and up 3 foot drifts. i was just wondering which is better to use, 4wd part time or 4wd full time? its the select trak on my 99 cherokee. all stock...unfortunately.

thats awesome if you have full time and part tme, I only have part time. full time, you can drive on pavement for a long time with no worries like if there was black ice in some spots and you want to be careful. the jeep will handle better in part time 4x4 but you dont want to run it on pavement for long, the tires need to be able to slip a little bit. but other than that I never hesitate to use my part time if there are any conditions that warrant it, the jeep is just so solid in 4X4

I got my drivers license the day it started snowing for the winter. Where I lived, we didn't get snow holidays until we got at least three feet out of one storm. That was a lot of years ago. Since then I have traveled up to 500 mi at a shot on snow and ice in Eastern Oregon and WA. So here is how it works.
If it is going to be slick, put it in 4WD period. That is what it is for. You can travel as fast as is safe for an indefinite period that way. If you run into intermittent patches of pavement and ice, leave it in 4WD. It will not hurt your drivetrain for a few feet on pavement to be in 4WD. If you have several hundred yards of pavement and there is gravel or loose sand on the side, put two of your tires in it and leave it in 4WD till the next patch of snow or ice. Anything else, put it in 2WD

Well its good to read this thread, Im in El paso so when it snows, all hell breaks loose, people panic, news goes crazy its pretty funny. Since were not use to it.
Were getting a lil bit to heated up there troth and zachsxj, But that bite me was uncalled for also. Those kinds of comments is what starts these arguements.
If you have nothing good to say then dont say anything at all. The thread veered off quickly and was not helping the OP.
